Memorial Quilt for Joshua

Memorial Quilt for Joshua

Completed:
I finished Josh's memorial quilt in June 2009. In addition to the T-shirts, I resized all of the photos that were used and I scanned and resized the many other items that his parents wanted included in the quilt top so that these images would fit onto the extra T-shirt blocks that I had to create. For the sashing, I used a dark blue fabric with gold metallic highlights and then I used a plain, navy blue fabric for the quilt binding. I presented the quilt to Johanne and Frank at the scholarship fundraiser they held in Josh's memory at the Whitney Farms Country Club.

Mid-Point:
I shared my ideas for the quilt with Josh's parents because I wanted their feedback during this process. It took some time for me to get the final vision into focus, but I am finally starting to put the quilt itself together. Inspiration is a strange thing. It comes to you at the oddest times and sometimes in the strangest ways. At least, that's how it works for me. I start out with a very rough idea of what I want to do, and then sometimes the quilt takes on a life of its own. I like when that happens because then the quilt making process never gets bland or boring that way.

Beginning:
I am working on a memory quilt for friends of mine who lost their son, Josh, in a car accident a little over a year ago. Right now, with their help, I am gathering up special items to include in the quilt. Some things I will be able to use directly, such as T-Shirts but other things I will scan and then print on to fabric. One of the items to be included in the quilt is a Celtic Cross that has special meaning for the family. I don't have a final design set in my mind for the quilt (as of yet) and that's OK. I will let the quilt speak to me and the design will evolve on its own.

Genealogy Quilt

Years ago, I became interested in genealogy and tracing my family tree back as far as I could go on both sides of my family.  In 2010, I made this "genealogy quilt" focusing on my mother, Irene.  I made this small quilt to look like a desk blotter.  Some of the things I included in this small quilt are pictures from her high school class, family pictures, census information about her and vintage postcards from the area in Vermont where she grew up.  My mother passed away in 2014 at age 95. Full Moon Over Stonehenge

I made this small (12"x12") art quilt for the 2016 SAQA Benefit Auction .  It's called, "Full Moon Over Stonehenge." I used a navy-blue speckled fabric for the night sky background.  I bought some Stonehenge fabrics by Northcott that I used for the vertical sarsen stones and the horizontal lintel stone.  The moon is a piece of very thin, silver lamé fabric, which I bonded to the background with Mistyfuse.  Within the radiating quilting lines, I added some Swarovski crystals for stars.  (It sold for $150.)
